Economics and music in New York City
New York has seen many strange and wonderful sights in its time, but for linguistic dexterity and topical relevance it would be hard to beat the recital of Tom Lehrer’s song ‘The Elements’ performed by Anthony Lipmann, of Lipmann Walton & Co. Ltd, at the Minor Metals Trade Association’s year-end dinner. (For anyone wishing to hear Tom Lehrer’s song click here)
This was the opening act of another well attended North American event for MMTA members and guests.
The guest speaker of the evening was the Dean of Brandeis University's International Business School, Dr Bruce R Magid, who gave an enlightening presentation on the current financial crisis.
Dean Magid foresaw global economic growth being impacted for up to five years if the markets can’t be coaxed into recovery and stressed the ‘three Bs’ needed for President Obama’s two year economic recovery plan to suceed: Big, Bold and Beneficial. Our thanks to Hudson Metals Corporation for arranging for Dean Magid’s presentation.
Anthony Lipmann, returning to the podium as the second speaker of the evening, gave attendees a detailed look into the fascinating metal market of rhenium.
Rhenium, the last non-radioactive metal to be discovered, has seen phenomenal price increases in recent years based on very limited production and strong growth from the superalloy and catalyst markets. While recognising that recently rhenium prices have dipped, Mr Lipmann was positive that the unique properties and limited supply of this metal will see it retain its value in the long run.
The next North American event will be in early Summer. Please contact the Executive for more details.
