Inspection Schedule

Open all containers, making note of any different markings, forms or indications of heterogeneity. Opening all the containers may well be impractical, alternatively open at least 20 bags for a lint parcel increasing by a 4 further bags for each subsequent sub lot of 20 MT. That is to say 24 bags for 40 MT, 28 bags for 60 MT, 32 bags for 80 MT etc.

Sampling Schedule

If there are no indications of material heterogeneity then sample on an incremental basis of 20 MT sub lots. If heterogeneity is suspected select the incremental groups accordingly but in sublots of 20 MT or less. Tip 10% of the open bags and make a size estimation of the material say in to three fractions:- > 50mm, 10mm to 50mm, and , < 10mm. Remove sam-ples of both the smaller fractions by the most practicable means of selection available, and then take a random lump of the > 50mm material from each of the open bags, these should be hand crushed on a clean sheet and reduced to approximately 10 to 15mm sizing and well mixed. A proportional bulk sample of manageable size can now be prepared in pro-portion from the three fractions. Where heterogeneity is suspected it may be considered necessary to segregate certain drums and prepare samples separately.

Sample Preparation

This bulk sample can then be crushed to < 0.18mm sizing, mixed and reduced by coning and quartering to give a final sample for reduction to nominally < 0.075mm and subdivision into quality samples. Where considered desirable the each sub lot can be each treated to produce an individual bulk sample which can either all contribute to give a composite sample or be treated individually to give a series of quality samples. The balance of the bulk samples being held for reference purposes.
