Inspection Schedule
Open all the drums, note any different markings, forms or indications of heterogeneity, note the oxide level. Opening all the containers may well be impractical, alternatively open at least the number of drums for a 20 MT parcel, increasing by a 20% of this number of drums for each subsequent sub lot of 20 MT. That is to say 240 drums for 40 MT, 280 drums for 60 MT, etc. (where the drum size is 100 KG net).
Sampling Schedule
If there are no indications of material heterogeneity then sample on an incremental basis of 20 MT sub lots. If heterogeneity is suspected select the incremental groups accordingly but in sublots of 20 MT or less. Tip 10% of the opened drums and using the appropriate shovel take samples top middle and bottom, place in a clean drum/container.
Sample Preparation
The samples from each incremental sublot should be mixed by coning and quartering to produce a homogeneous bulk sample in each instance.
Two options are then open:
1. Quality samples can be drawn from each homogenised sub lot bulk sample.
2. Alternatively a composite can be prepared from portions of each sublots to give a total parcel bulk sample from which total parcel quality samples may be drawn.
The balance of the sub lots being held for reference purposes.
