Original producer packing can be of particular importance; close attention should be paid to the MMTA regulations relating to the resealing of damaged drums, or repacking of drums no longer suitable for onward transit by the holding warehouse.

Inspection Schedule

Open all containers, inspect entire contents, making note of any different markings, forms or indications of heterogeneity or contamination. Segregate if necessary. Confirm packing lists, and note all details. 

Sampling Schedule

If there are no indications of material heterogeneity then sample on an incremental basis of 5 MT sub lots. If heterogeneity is suspected the incremental groups accordingly but in sublots of 5 MT or less.

INGOTS: From the contents of each of the emptied containers take ingots at a rate of half the square root (rounded up) of the number of ingots in the container. Drill each ingot with a tungsten carbide tipped drill at 600/700 rpm using a predetermined template which accounts for the whole of the ingot form. Mix to create a sublot sample.

GRANULES: Use a large auger to sample, ensuring a full depth sample is taken to provide for a moisture determination as well as the analytical samples. Alternatively tip 10% of the opened drums and use the appropriate shovel to take top, middle, and bottom increments. Mix and reduce for moisture samples of 2 Kg.

Where heterogeneity of contamination is suspected it may be considered necessary to segregate certain drums and prepare samples separately.

Sample Preparation

The samples from each incremental sub-lot should be mixed by coning and quartering to produce a homogeneous bulk sample in each instance. These bulk samples should be crushed or milled to give a final quality sample.
Two options are then open:
     1. Quality samples can be drawn from each homogenised sub-lot bulk sample.
     2. Alternatively a composite can be prepared from portions of each sub-lot to give a total parcel bulk sample from which total parcel quality samples may be drawn.
The balance of the bulk samples being held for reference purposes.
